Switch Choir

The circuit I designed for the switch choir using a 1S LiPo battery, on/off switch, Arduino Nano, etc.

During my Junior year of high school, I worked with a team of people to create a device that could convert a button press into a Bluetooth signal. Our high school worked with local assistive technology organizations to create devices for clients with disabilities. One of the clients ran a music therapy session to help people with poor motor control. Each person pressed a button to create music as a group, like a bell choir (except in this case it was a switch choir). However, this switch choir used outdated software and relied on long cords that would force members close together and make the music therapy session uncomfortable. So, my group created a wireless adapter for each button wireless and wrote an Android app that would replace the outdated software.

Electronics Design

The adapter circuit inside a case I designed.

Most buttons in assistive technology have an auxiliary cord to connect to devices. So, I designed a circuit to accept the aux. port and convert it into a Bluetooth signal.

I worked on the device itself while my teammate worked on the Android app. I used a perf board to connect an Arduino Nano to a Bluetooth transceiver, 5V booster, Li-ion battery, charging module, and auxiliary port. I assigned a name to each Bluetooth transceiver so each box had a unique identifier. I also coded the Arduino to send serial data across the Bluetooth module. Additionally, I designed and printed a plastic case to cover the box while giving access to the aux. and the charging ports.

The adapter with a plugged in button that the music therapy group would often use.

Final Design

We built seven of these boxes and delivered them to the client who was able to use them in their music therapy sessions. This device made it easier for each patient to participate in the switch choir. Several months after the project concluded, I went to the Massachusetts state house in Boston with other high school students to present our work in assistive technology to state representatives.
